The Partnership
What is it?
Equal Education has partnered with West Midlands Virtual Schools from Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, and Sandwell to deliver a tutoring intervention programme to improve the educational outcomes of Children in Care,
How does it work?
This is a direct intervention model; Equal Education will work with nominated teachers within schools to train and case manage individualised tuition for nominated children. The teachers will then provide one to one tuition for individual children to improve their literacy, writing and reading skills. The programme will be judged using independent external assessments.
Why teachers from the school?
Research for the UCL Institute of Education shows that existing teachers in the school are in the best position to be tutors because they have the best picture of the child’s educational needs and more importantly a trusted relationship with them. Where that is not possible, or agreed by the young person, an external tutor from Equal Education’s network of qualified teachers will be used.
What training will teachers receive?
The project team will work with the teachers to develop a CPD package for the needs of the children, particularly on trauma and attachment approaches. This training will benefit all the children that the teachers work with.
What next?
We’re aiming to find out what does and doesn’t work for these students, based on those learnings we’re going to tweak and change the programme so the we can maximise it’s impact on young learners’ lives. If it’s a success we might be lucky enough to roll out it to the rest of the region or even nationally!
